I'm here mostly to give useful info to other disabled people that might be able to get longer-term aid with experienced help. However, I wish to point to Autistics.org (there's a PayPal link on their site, I didn't want to look like a crook by posting it here).
It's a wonderful, unique nonprofit that has made a huge difference in my life and that of many others. They've been financially struggling as long as I can remember, not because they're spendaholics, but because the people owning/running the servers are disabled living on the poverty-income of SSI, like Amanda Baggs. The following is an overly-modest description from their homepage, where they have a PayPal link:
"The purpose of the autistics.org project is to connect autistic people with the services we need to live whole and happy lives. The immediate goal of autistics.org is to build a global database of information and resources by and for persons on the autistic spectrum. The autistics.org project is by and for autistics, not parents of autistic children, though family members and professionals may find this website helpful."
Parents of a newly-diagnosed autie or adults that finally have been told why they're different after decades of struggling & depression often feel scared and lost. In most places out there, the only "information" about autism boils down to claims we're useless sociopathic burdens that destroy our parents' lives: you can imagine how spirit-crushing that is! Luckily, I was told about Autistics.org -- in addition to the above description, it has a discussion area, holds a real-time online discussion group, and (best in my view) a "Library" where autistics have explained all kinds of things from firsthand experience that you won't learn about elsewhere.
Even if you don't have the money to help them out, please wander through their Library and learn a little about the "other" people living peacefully alongside you in society. You might recognize a friend, a partner's kid from a previous marriage, a co-worker, neighbor, perhaps even yourself -- but even getting that chance understand if you see someone that might be one of us, rather than flashing back on media reports of how we're miserable monsters, is of uncountable value.
